Tindersticks: The Hungry Saw (2008)

If you were of the opinion that Tindersticks may have gone through some kind of drastic sea change brought on by their five-year hiatus and the absence of founding member and co- architect of their trademark sound, Dickon Hinchliffe, you are dead wrong. The band weathered the storm and on their seventh studio album, The Hungry Saw, the three remaining members of the band retain every last aspect of what made the band special (the inventive arrangements, the cinematic sweep of the songs, Stuart Staples' distinctive vocals) but also manage to sound rejuvenated and fresh at the same time. The last album they made before their split, Waiting for the Moon, seemed like it was just another in a long line of excellent releases by the band. The Hungry Saw is hungrier, more dramatic, and if not exactly urgent, it feels like the work of a band with something to prove. Staples, in particular, brings something extra to both his vocals (clearer than usual and with more bite) and lyrics ("The Hungry Saw" has some of his most powerfully visceral words to date). It is one of his best performances in a long career full of them. The arrangements too are given extra care. The horn arrangements by longtime associate Terry Edwards are superb and the strings sound rich and suitably dramatic on the heavy ballads and breezy on the light ones. The addition of Suzanne Osborne's wordless backing vocals on the lovely and harrowing "All the Love" are a welcome touch of sunshine too. As is the candy sweet melody and acoustic strum of the almost poppy "Boobar Come Back to Me." Not that the record is a smile fest by any stretch, there is still enough chill blowing through it to make your teeth hurt. It wouldn't be a Tindersticks record without that, and songs like "The Other Side of This World" and "Mother Dear" have enough sadness coursing through them to satisfy the needs of any gloom junky who has come to count on the band for a quick fix. Indeed, Tindersticks have never failed to satisfy anyone looking not only for sadness but also those looking for albums that make you feel and songs that will stick with you for a long time. The Hungry Saw is classic Tindersticks.

Tobin Sprout: Carnival Boy (1996)

It's not all that surprising that Tobin Sprout's solo debut, Carnival Boy, sounds remarkably similar to Guided By Voices. Sprout was as responsible for GBV's lo-fi, jangly art-rock as Robert Pollard, helping push his partner toward the group's distinctive sound. Like Under the Bushes, Under the Stars, the GBV album that was released six months prior to Sprout's album, Carnival Boy has a brighter sound than the band's early records, due to slightly more sophisticated recording equipment and a more unified sense of purpose.

I concur with the review. Everyone should own all things Tindersticks. Nick would approve.

Bryan Ferry ~ Let's Stick Together

hxxp://www.sendspace.com/file/z1883x

LET'S STICK TOGETHER (Harrison) 3:00
CASANOVA (Bryan Ferry) 2:45
SEA BREEZES (Bryan Ferry) 6:10
SHAME, SHAME, SHAME (Reed) 3:15
2 HB (Bryan Ferry) 3:50
THE PRICE OF LOVE (Don & Phil Everly) 3:25
CHANCE MEETING (Bryan Ferry) 3:35
IT'S ONLY LOVE (John Lennon/Paul McCartney) 3:45
YOU GO TO MY HEAD (Gillespie/Coots) 2:50
RE-MAKE/RE-MODEL (Bryan Ferry) 2:40
HEART ON MY SLEEVE (Gallagher/Lyle) 3:30

As Roxy approached its mid- to late-'70s hibernation, Ferry came up with another fine solo album, though one of his most curious. With Thompson and Wetton joined by U.K. journeyman guitarist Chris Spedding, Ferry recorded an effort that seemed as much of a bit of creative therapy as it was music for its own sake. On the one hand, he followed the initial formula established for his solo work, looking back to earlier rock, pop, and soul classics with gentle gusto. The title track itself, a cover of the fluke Wilbert Harrison '60s hit, scored Ferry a deserved British hit single, with great sax work from Chris Mercer and Mel Collins and a driving, full band performance. Ferry's delivery is one of his best, right down to the yelps, and the whole thing chugs with post-glam power. Other winners include the Everly Brothers' "The Price of Love" and the Beatles' "It's Only Love," delivered with lead keyboards from Ferry and a nice, full arrangement. On the other hand, half of the album consisted of Ferry originals "” but, bizarrely, instead of creating wholly new songs, he re-recorded a slew of earlier Roxy classics. Fanciful fun or exorcising of past demons? It's worth noting that most of the songs come from the Eno period of the band, and consequently the new versions stear clear of the sheer chaos he brought to the original Roxy lineup. As it is, the end results are still interesting treats "” "Casanova" exchanges the blasting stomp of the original for a slow, snaky delivery that suggests threat without sounding too worried about it. "Re-Make/Re-Model," meanwhile, turns downright funky without losing any of its weird lyrical edge. Others have subtler differences, as when the stark, stiff midsection of "Sea Breezes" becomes a looser, slow jam.
