I once attended a U2 concert at the tennis stadium in Melbourne, when they were supported by B.B. King and an Australian band called 'Weddings Parties Anything.' BOTH support acts were much better.

This was my first and last experience of U2 live, who were too loud (I mean unbearably, ridiculously, that's-not-music-any-more-it's-become-noise loud), too bored (the bass player looked like he'd entered a competition to see how long he could hold a disinterested facial expression) and too self-important (I think you all know who I'm referring to...).

B.B. King gave it everything & was great, but the real revelation was Weddings Parties Anything. I subsequently saw the band loads of times & ended up buying all their CDs.

No one.

Deerhoof completely blew me away the first time I saw them, but not quite as incredible as the Lips' act.

I saw the Dismemberment Plan in 1997 or so opening up for a crappy pop-punk band with a lousy "aren't we cool" attitude. I don't even remember what their name was. oh wait, i do. They were called "Animal Chin" and THEY SUCKED.

That show actually had another band that was better than Animal Chin, and that was Cheer Accident. I doubt anyone remembers them, except maybe for Emp.

I saw Ben folds open for tori amos. That's kind of a toss-up, but I do prefer Ben Folds.

Man Man opening for Modest Mouse.

The mice weren't too bad, but Man Man played their stuff with about 4000 times more energy. I went out and bought one of their CDs as soon as I could, entirely due to how they performed with gusto.

Unfortunately, there was another opening act before Man Man. I think it was some band called Love as Laughter or something like that and they sucked. Their songs were bad and they looked like they were half asleep. It was horrible.

I loved me some Soul Coughing. I kind of lost interest in M Doughty's new stuff though. His Skittish album is a gem though. Maybe I will upload it in the dump.

yes, soul coughing were great.

there was a third band there but I can't remember who they were. All I remember was it was the most incongruous lineup I'd ever heard of. It was a tour sponsored by levi's jeans or something.

Love as Laughter are alright. Saw them at the Slint ATP in 2005, they were one of the better acts of a really boring lineup.

Best support act I've seen were the Flaming Lips in Dublin in 1995, they were so good I headed off before the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Moby could ruin my buzz.

Tortoise blew Stereolab off the stage in '96. Don't know if they could do it now though.

Beck concert, with MGMT opening. I already know who I'm more excited for...

question:

am I right when I pronounce that band as the word "Management"? Or do I actually have to say M-G-M-T when I refer to them?

I just heard of them recently, and all.

Flaming Lips opening for Candlebox, Indianapolis 1996

Bob Dylan opening for Phil and Friends, Indianapolis 2000

Man Man opening for Fiery Furnaces, San Francisco 2006 (I LOVE Fiery Furnaces, but this tour was when Matt decided not to play keyboards, he wanted to wank off on electric guitar only. Not a good decision. I've seen them 5 times and this was a freaky aberration, the other 4 were absolutely amazing).

Primus opening for Rush, Omaha 1994

Ween opening for Foo Fighters Denver 1996

The last time I saw Acid Mothers Temple, MAMMATUS opened for them and I actually thought they might be better than the Temple. They weren't. I guess I can't think of any examples because I don't go to nearly as many live shows as I'd like and when I do it's always to see bands I really want to see.
