Never mind that no one would be found dead listening to a disco track twenty years ago. I am just surprised that within the latter part of last decade, and all through the new millennium it's become cool. I guess it's better late than never, but to that end no one is going back and appreciating the rich and diverse history. It's all these new cats either cherry-picking or just straight jacking old school shit without offering anything original; or, it's all diluted and soulless.

Of course the argument can be made that anything you can dance to should be considered dance music, but for the purposes of this thread I think the commonly accepted definition would be music that follows a relatively strict definition and aesthetic. I am usually either discovering or re-discovering obscure funk, disco, or house gems. Nothing new really grabs me unless it's some old school dj doing a white label underground mix of something as current as Hercules and Love Affair.

Speaking of Hercules and Love Affair, Crue-L Grand Orchestra did it way better back in the 90's with soul. No one talks about them, though. True disco.

I think you definitely have a fair argument, but the same case could be made for any genre. How many upper middle class kids moved to the Lower East Side in the last 15 years to slum it and form some cheap VU knockoff? Countless. Some did a piss poor job, some actually turned out to be respectable in their own right. Its true in all walks of life. There will always be the Andy Warhol post-modern argument of "everything that can be done has already been done", but obviously its more complex than that. In the end, if people are having fun (and dancing), then Id say what the current crop has achieved is pretty admirable. Sure beats the hell out of the standard "I'm too cool to acknowledge I even like the band" mindset which has been all too prevalent in music today. And I do think that the current reincarnation of this dance trend has prompted a lot of people to go back and listen to the original sources. With the internet its become even easier to rediscover obscure or forgotten artists. Hell, sometimes I'll just walk into Dusty Groove and pick up 3 old funk records at random and walk out...some have been duds, but I've discovered a lot of great stuff that way. Im a casual fan, but I certainly dont pretend that these guys dont owe a huge debt to the forefathers, and as far as revivals go I think it could be a lot worse.

Donald Byrd, Love has come around

Thats a good one. And to get back to EMPs point, I actually first heard it on James Murphy's Fabriclive 36 compilation. So again, people can say LCD or or whoever are cherry picking, but they've done more to revive interest in the old stuff than I think they've been given credit for.

A lot. No one is going to be remembering the Black Angels in twenty years, but it seems like within the realm of rock music a casual music fan tends to dig a bit deeper, not always, but sometimes. With dance music, I don't think anyone who listens to MSTRKRFT is going to go out of their way to find a Betty Wright record.

Well, that's pretty much it. "If you can dance to it." You can pretty much dance to anything. I think there's a bit more to it than just being able to dance to it, this is why there are so many subpar and/or wholly retro dance artists being hyped today.

You are different and far removed from a casual music fan. But I do see your point. I just cannot get behind shit like Crystal Castles, and though Justice might have a bit of something all I think about is how Daft Punk does it way better.

I've often wondered how Donald Byrd's latter stuff sounds. I like it. I'm only familiar with his album Ehtiopian Knights, which is like some space-infused, jazz-funk odyssey...AKA, more rare and deep cuts for the Flaming Lips to pilfer. Cool

They sound like a shitty Daft Punk. When I listen to them I want to hear real funk and disco, and not a hipster version of it.

Makes me mad.

I both love and hate Daft Punk. Love them for being authentic and progressive, but hate them for all of the dreadful shit that followed in their wake.

You must not love much music, then, considering that every notable act always influences legions of shitty ones.

But as to the Kompakt links you posted before, I can get down with some minimal house. It's pretty much the only house sub-genre I dig.

Same with Techno. On the whole it's really not my thing, but I used to get down with stuff from the Harthouse label, and old school stuff like Moodymann. So much house was infused with that stuff, though, I really don't consider it pure techno.

Minimal is cool, tho.

MNML!!! CHOOON!!!

I feel a line dance coming on.

My fave dance music is the Bee Gees disco era music.

No line dancing here. Two-step ONLY...and very rudimentary waltz. Still learning that one. Unfortunately, my teacher is back on tour with her band until December.
