i just read a review in the Boston Globe today saying it was "shockingly boring" - and the critic is a real good rock critic for the Globe.
I'll be seeing it anyway i'm sure, but...I was going to see it with my fiance this weekend, who's at best a casual Lips fan. Wonder if i should let her off the hook on this one and she stays home.
I dont really do psychedelic drugs anymore...am i gonna dig this??

I find that a lot of the things I really tend to love the most are things that seem to really divide people (Lynch anyone?), they either love it or hate it, and I almost always end up wondering what in the fuck is wrong with the people who fall on the other side.

It's not really a critic's film, in the sense that critics have specific things they are looking for, and CoM doesn't fit the standard definition of that. The acting ranges from outstanding to pretty bad (but still entertaining, and fitting for the 50's sci-fi movie style anyway), and while the plot is fun, it's certainly pretty thin, all things considered. Christmas on Mars is much more of an experience than just a movie, which makes me think it'll probably lose a lot of its power on DVD rather than seeing it in a theater or at a festival (lucky bastards!).
As for not doing psych. drugs anymore, I was a little stoned when I saw it and that was it, and I enjoyed it a lot. Acid or shrooms would probably enhance the experience, but they're certainly not required.

No doubt. That experience in OKC, with the thunderstorm going on outside, with the beer being sold outside the tent (Stella!), pot smoke hung thick over the audience in the tent, and joints being passed indiscriminately around the crowd, is one I will truly treasure forever! THE way to see this film. I still of course look forward to the DVD, but it won't be the same as that.
Gonz, first time?
