Hola! So, Wayne mentioned "Eraserhead," "Dead Man," and "2001" as inspirations behind "Christmas on Mars."

Does anyone else have some recommendations for movies of a similar, freaky, sci-fi feel?

Leolo (1992): Surreal french black comedy like no other.

After Hours (1985): Dark, edgy, sexually-charged mystery of a film from Martin Scorsese.

Memento (2000): Some say masterpiece; some say gimmick. It's closer to the former.

ooh i know. barbarella. cheeky, campy, fantastical..... and the opening sequence came to mind during the opening of xmas on mars.

Perhaps The Man Who Fell To Earth? Maybe Pi? Anything Lynch. Naked Lunch.

havn't seen CoM but with Wayne's cheesy, obvious references its easy to add Alphaville as inspirations for his choices...

Sad Eco sci-fi, its the film I thought of when Wayne talked about the film his mom saw on TV late at night.

Seemed a lot less sad when I saw it a month a go then when I saw it as a kid, I think I've just become a cold hearted bastard!

well, i just watched the video interview with wayne where he talks about the movie his mom watched that inspired the movie, which is clearly "marooned" (1969)with gene hackman and gregory peck. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064639/

May (2002). About a girl who decides to 'make' the perfect friend. (of course it's NOT similar, but who can refuse a film about a girl who cuts up people and sews them together.

Not exactly as W.C describes, but awfully damn close.

Surely it was one of the films Mrs. Coyne drifted in and out of on that fateful night. I kept waiting for the alien super being to show up with the part the ship needed attatched to the front of his uniform (though I didn't watch it to the end, I don't know how it ended, but I was getting the impression that wasn't going to happen).

Check out a recent movie I just saw this last weekend called Sunshine (2007). It's a really good sci-fi flick, directed by Danny Boyle (of Trainspotting fame), about a crew of scientists who are traveling to the dying sun in order to try to reignite it. It was surprisingly good. 'Must've had horrible marketing because I didn't even know it existed until just recently. Really captures that isolated in space feel nicely.
