What were your reactions after seeing the movie?

The first time I saw it I thought it was good but I was so caught up in the fact that I was watching Christmas on Mars that I didn't enjoy it as much.

The second time I could focus more on the story and I thought it was fantastic.

I'm looking forward to seeing it again and again.

As a side note, though, I am sad that they took out the scene with Isaac Brock.

edit.

nevermind, it would have messed with the momentum of the movie but I still enjoy it nevertheless.

Well... the acting is pretty bad....

.. but I FUCKIN' LOVE IT!

This is definitely the sort of movie that you can watch 100 times and get something different out of it each time. I've watched it twice so far (got it in the mail on Friday) and I've already got plans to watch it tomorrow with a couple friends.

What's everyone else think?

I thought Steven did a great job acting, but I wish Wayne's character spoke (preferably words of wisdom) once in a while. Yeah, it took me a while to get over the fact I was actually watching it. Seven years is a long time to wait...

Also--I'd be curious to know when they filmed one of the last scenes in it, with Wayne and Steven. The tone of the whole thing kind of changed at the very end, I thought.

It looks like they re-shot a handful of scenes. The ones from the original 2002(?) trailer show some parts that Fred Armisen took over.

It's odd that Wayne didn't talk, but it works better that way. Wayne has such a strong and familiar personality that it would be hard to see him past the character if he did, sort of like Kevin Smith with Silent Bob. Yea yea, I did just make that comparison.

Plus, you can hear Wayne a lot in the script so it's not like feedback directly from the source would add anything more.

Well I guess I worded it sorta harshly. I don't think the acting was all that bad.. just a bit obvious that some of them didn't have a lot of acting experience.

But of course it was great enough that it doesn't make me love the movie any less. =]

My thoughts exactly. It was actually better than I thought it might be and I thought Steven was particularly good for a non-actor (although he did say he did stuff at high School). Anyway his shifty eyes and nervy mumblings were spot on for his character. I would've liked to hear Wayne's voice through a voice synthesizer. A philosophical discussion between him and the surly base commander would've been a fun interlude.

I mean considering it was an idea of Wayne's, filmed in a plastic tank in his backyard and a shut-down cement works, using everyday objects and acted by the band and friends, it is a fine piece of weirdness and more worthy than many a rock band feature film.

I found it almost as claustrophobic, disturbing and confusing as Tarkovsky's "Solaris" which it kind of echoes at times, but how can you have a serious conversation with a film buff about marching bands with genitals for heads?

I will watch it again for sure.

Also the soundtrack album is great and works as an album. It reminds me a lot of some of the stuff on Eno's "Music for Films" and early Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh so I've played it several times now. It's good in the dark.

I got my package last week. I was seriously perplexed as to why I was getting a package in the mail and had no idea what it was until I opened it. Since everyone had had so many issues with getting theirs, I wasn't expecting it anytime soon. Everything was in it...except that Golden Ticket I was hoping for Frown

We watched it Saturday night, and all I can say is..Wow. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get those marching vagina heads out of my head for quite awhile. That was pretty disturbing.

Anyway...does anyone know why it's subtitled in Russian and if the symbols (star, 4 sided snowflake, pot leaf) represent anything?

Some of my random thoughts:
I recall, and try to dissect, the movie quite a bit after having seen it a few times. That's typically a sign to me that I liked the movie, and it is also one of the main qualities I enjoy from movies.

This not a typical movie. Many of the technical aspects are awkward or "bad", and I admit I was bored and confused at times. But there are so many other things in this movie that are exciting gems- things that I don't normally get out of 95% of the other movies I like to watch (NOISE! SOUND! Eat your own spaceship!, VAGINAS!, ART!, HUMANITY!, HOPE!, ANXIETY!, LOVE!, HATE!, FLAMING LIPS! , etc etc). I'm satisfied with the balance of fresh and uncomfortable.

I like the idea of seeing one of my favorite directors remake this thing! On the other hand, one of the thousand reasons why I love the lips is because of their fearless attitude towards creation and expression. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be honest and from the heart.

Wouldn't we all be excited if our best friend wanted to make a sci fi flick in their back yard? I'd be there the next morning, "Fuck yeah!".

I'd be happy to watch CoM II (or will it be "The Moth Man of Mars that Saved the Universe by Stubbing His Watermelon?"). I'd be happy to watch shorts. Hell, I'd watch Wayne paint his shed.

I finally saw the movie last night. i got the package a loong time ago, but waited until i could score a lecture hall at school to see it.

it was a fine movie. i liked the visuals and the score. the acting wasn't good, but it made the movie seem real. although i don't know why NASA would send these types of guys to space. at its best, it appeared to be an episode of the Twilight Zone.

I thought Kliph killed his part.....brilliant!

I also like that in the deluxe edition pak Kliph got his own trading card....finally! It is a four person band. (for some reason Kliph did not get a special edition laser pointer when the Zoo DVD came out...)

Honestly my expectations were very low going into it, and I prepared the set and setting perfectly for my first viewing.....

I was pleasantly surprised.

I loved it....

It was sad seeing Steven in some scenes, knowing how deeply fucked up he was at certain points....and then realizing how thankful I am to still have him alive!

I thought WC did a fantastic job, both directing, and in his acting. Love the scene where he is being screamed at......any movie that can go 90 minutes with Wayne Coyne in it without him speaking is a must see oddity to begin with.

The sound effects, and surround sound production were outstanding....I love the soundtrack, wish it had just the surround sound soundtrack as well in the package....stereo seems limp and lifeless after seeing the movie in surround.

I turned to a friend after it was over, a casual fan, and all she had to say was: "Does Michael always wear shades?"

I watched it at midnight this morning with a few mates. I guess I expected it to be more whimsical and and psychedelic. Seemed like they were going for an Eraserhead type of thing with little dialogue and lots of intentionally confusing silent shots so that you have to construct the plot in your head kind of. It looked pretty low budget too...

kind of like the new Portishead album: totally caught me off guard upon first experiencing it cause it wasn't what I was expecting at all, but once I accept the fact that it is what it is, I appreciate it a lot more

I watched it again today and I've come to the conclusion that Michael is a total badass. He has the best line in the movie, fo sho fo sho.

Maybe it's the glasses and the stoicism that do it..
