Saw it yesterday. It made me think that they wanted to make a tribute to the old cheesy, but cool, late night movies that would constantly air very late at night in the '70s - I remember them. Stuff like you wake up after being zonked out on the couch and you wake up to some crazy, weird far-out flick that mixes with the haziness of being half-awake. Kinda like what 'Amazon Women on the Moon' wanted to do but this time with much less slapstick.
It contained some really bad acting - which - is to be expected I guess - we were never promised any different - so, can't fault them too much for that. I also found it ironic that Wayne had a nonspeaking role - bless him, he was great. Michelle was a nice surprise. Steven looked close to death - so glad he is doing better.
Overall, I think it a a great druggy movie if you are in the mood for such, as I often am. Some really good shots are to be seen and the soundtrack is A+ (do I detect the piano part of Schubert's Trio in E-Flat (Op. 100) in the strains of the film's main theme that plays throughout)? I only heard it in stereo (and it sounded GREAT!) so, it must awesome in 5.1
Anyway, its a real labor of love from the band for the fans. Thanks Lips!
I got my copy today and just watched it. While some here have made some decent points I'm going to have to side with FLAMINGGREV here.
As a Flips fan for over 20+ yrs I found the whole thing to be somewhat of a mess. No character development or plot development.
Even Erasehead had character development in it. Even if the plot was nonexistent.
And while I can see the similarities with Kubrick and Lynch, its more in esthetics than anything else. Very tactile.
I found it to be like a student college film with a bit more production.
If I were someone who had no idea who the Flaming Lips were, I'd have turned it off in the first 5 minutes.
And as far as this being something that's reminiscent of something shown on late 70's TV...I find it to be even subpar on that standard.
I used to be an avid watcher of the 70'S series "CHILLER THEATER" as well as "THE MILLION DOLLAR MOVIE" (for those of you in the northeast of the country) and even as bad as some of those films were there was still a sense of either plot or character development.
My main problem was..."Why should I care about any of these people?"
In any movie you must create a sense of kinderedness to the characters on screen to its audience. I got none of that.
Even if its a negative vibe, one must establish that first.
I will give Wayne and Co. a full thumbs up for the effort and time spent trying to complete this project, but maybe it would have been better spent on their last album.
Maybe I'm projecting too much on to the film...I've been drinking margarita's all night long....
At this point all I can say is, now that it's over, let's get back to making superior albums!
PS..After watching the interview portions of the DVD, MICHALE IVENS is GOD!
Also, thank the maker for Dictionary.com!

Im not sure i would've - i think the musical soundscapes alone would be enough to keep me interested.
i didnt have a problem with not caring about the characters - i think there was enough with getting drawn into Syrtis' bemusement at the unfolding events.
I do think they kind of bungled the final act though - there was very little sense of jepardy with the machine faliure, and as a result total lack of impact when the Martian fixed it - and a big 'so what?' when Ivins made it snow.
But i definitely didnt find it 'a mess' - found it surprisingly well put together, with some great imagery tied together with that beautiful score! Would love to hear more Flips movie scores in the future (Lynch or Maddin should hire them!) . . .

i wasn't too keen on the captain's acting - it was like he was trying to do Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket basically. i just didn't believe it.
the lines about coming in when his shirt was off were funny though.
wayne's character seemed very Jesus to me though. not reacting when the captain was putting him down and then giving his heart to fix the thing (i guess this is what happened). although maybe it was just the Santa character Steven speaks off - the traits of the Santa character.

I'd halucinate vaginas too.
hahaha, yeah, i thought it odd Michele being the only female in the whole movie. No other wives/girlfriends want to get in on this? Or was she the only one invited?
Anyway, I do have to add my agreement in that I hope Wayne now spends his time on making music & not movies anymore as I think it would be better spent.

4th time viewing, had some old friends in from out of town. They actually made the trip with us to NYE 07, and hadn't seen the movie yet.
I'm starting to find more humor in the movie.
What were they doing on Mars? I suddenly realized that maybe their whole plan there was to colonize, reproduce, baby.. etc- but it's all artificial. I'm wondering if it's also an anti drug message in there? Wayne has mentioned that drugs are an artificial means to the state of mind that already exists within.
are the baby and vagina scenes the cosmic reality Fred is describing? Is kliph seeing the same visions?
I think there are a few dud moments that kill the timing and pace. I understand that this is relatively an experimental piece and doesn't abide by normal movie standards, but I think a bit more consideration for the viewer, at the expense of art, would have helped this movie a lot. This movie is really close to being right on.

I love that scene. Desperately... particularly Silverman's description of it as it's happening. That whole sequence is easily my favorite part of the film.
