Thought it'd be interesting to ask this.

What songs do you think would be good to open and close a Flaming Lips set, other than Race For The Prize and Do You Realize??

For starting, I don't know, Race For The Prize is hard to beat imo. But I think Pompeii am Gotterdammerung kicks equal amounts of rawk ass, it's my favourite song to see them play live. The Abandoned Hospital Ship would be great too.

And for finishing, I think Do You Realize?? loses its impact after a while. Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, A Spoonful Weighs A Ton... They have a ton of songs with appropriate sentiments to end on.

What do y'all think?

By the way, this isn't supposed to be a whiny why-won't-they-change-their-set thread. Interesting discussion hopefully.

Golden Path to begin,Chrome plated sucide to finish would be fabulose,with none of the songs in the current set played again for at least 5 years-even do you realize.Then get back to setting the stage,their hair or whatever om fire.I would even like to hear the new album played in its entirety.

Time Travel..Yes would be great to open and then play an entire album like Transmissions. Then end with a second set of other material.

Opening monologue/video from CoM with the moths > Moth in the Incubator > 35000 feet of despair

Vagina opening > observer > what is the light (With the strobes in time with the heartbeat the whole time.)

I like that one, sokoban. My favourite Lips era is Zaireeka/Soft Bulletin time, and I think the Christmas on Mars soundtrack is fucking brilliant. Wayne was doing it a great disservice by referring to it as an "ambient soundtrack". Hearing Steven singing the main parts to In Excelsior Vaginalistic along with the opening was really really... Good Smile

Agreed Watching the Planets should be the new closer!

Race for the Prize is so hard to top as an opener though... I could actually see Yeah Yeah Yeah Song being used as an opener, but that's another overplayed song. Pompeii could work too, although it starts off kinda slow... that's what's so awesome about Race opening, that one-two punch it kicks off with.

A few years ago I made the same sentiment, but in all honestly at this point I am dying for a different opening song. And as for closers the same goes for "Do You Realize???" The statement you made about loosing impact holds true for some, but not for others. I fall into the former category, and, goddamnit, it just shouldn't be that way.
