Remember the whole Anna Nicole Smith thing? Kind of like that. all of that said, this whole OMG THE LIPZ SOLD OUT thing is alot like that, sure, ive met Wayne, ive met Steven, but is it really going to affect my relationship to the music if it is on some salad commercial?

No, becuase my life, my purpose, is greater than defending something which does not affect my relationship to what i like and what i deem worthy

most people like that were most likely missing a few hugs early on in life and never really learned how and where to direct their anger

The need to constantly spam a website with this "concern" of theirs kind of gives you a glimpse into that. Like Jerry Garcia said

"Say your peace and get out"

I first heard the Flaming Lips on BEVERLY HILLS 90210! They had already "sold out" before I ever liked them, and since they have continued to blow my mind, keep me entertained, and fill me with joy since that time in the mid-nineties, I can see no reason to complain.

Note: This message is in no way endorsing any of the products endorsed by the band I am endorsing.

I never watch commercials, my DVR took care of that...commercials are bad in general...thought we all knew that. I enjoy not knowing what people are talking about around the water cooler when it comes to the latest Bud Lite commercial.

I did hear that the band was donating a lot of cash lately to Scientology and the ultra conservative think tank:
EarthLast...kidding of course, but wouldn't that be something to actually be pissed off about?

I can't imagine a better life than some random company paying me thousands of dollars for a snippet of my music that is already done, and paid for once! Residual income at its finest.

I think they should grab every golden apple they can, while they can.

I just read somewhere that AWWTM only sold 200k+ copies*....they rarely have merch at shows, they are against any kind of live music sales, and they keep ticket prices low, plus they do all kinds of extras like lasers, popcorn, glow sticks, confetti, UFO's....etc....The money has to come from somewhere.....

there is just so much else in the world that is so much more fucked up right now I can't seem to be bothered by anything the lips do to make a buck to stay in business.

It bums me out that your so bummed out by it though....

Good post Kristen, I agree....

I am long past second guessing the band, I prefer to listen to their music.

It should also be noted that I first found the lips live late night, disoriented, at Bonnaroo 2003 and had no idea who the fuck they were: in costumes doing Floyd covers....I came back home and forgot about it.....heard DYR in a commercial at a friends house and asked everyone who the band was....the lips....same band I just saw....hmmm how can this be>? Someone loaned me The Soft Bulletin.....

the rest is history....I may never have found them without that commercial....

Just saying......

let the guys alone! they had a good swim in obscurity for 20+ years so let 'em make some $. if mutherfuckers didn't d/load free shit all of the time the music business wouldn't be in the shambles it is now. It could be worse.

Examples:

Beastie Boys "Slow and Low" for Tempo laxitives...."slow and low, that is the tempo!"

Ozzy Osbourne "No More Tears"....Johnson and Johnson "no more tears" baby shampoo.

Pearl Jam "Evenflo"....for Evenflo baby bottle nipples.

...now if someone puts out a cream for stinky crotch problems and they sell the rights to the company for "March of the Rotten Vegetables" I'll pretend I've never heard of The Flaming Lips.

ditto. Not sure though there's much I haven't seen. Except the naked ladies which I think would have been cool if they had kept it to the first show and left it at that. I hate to say it but they (the band) keep losing me and my interest, bit by bit. Perhaps I will get excited again when they come out with their next album. At least I hope so-I miss having a musical obsession. At this point I wouldn't travel any significant distance to see them. Perhaps I burned out or perhaps it's the fact that every time I use my Kraft salad dressing I think of them. Fuckin' shame.

I certainly don't think it's fun to have my favorite band associated with the likes of camel, salad dressing, land rover and the like. As a result the songs they used have been cheapened....and as for political speeches being delivered on-stage-save it for the politicos. You can't take money from the devil and preach that the devil is wrong at the same time. This has ruined a lot of the album for me actually-can't listen to it anymore. again.....fucking shame. Perhaps the naked ladies dancing onstage during the show will keep their popularity-cheap.

Lips songs have been in commercials for years, how is it just becoming a problem for you in the last year? Because it happened a lot?

Yes, they did it for the money.

Why go through all this again? Was the message “please come to SF, as long as you behave how I want you to?” Was it just to spread the disenchantment around? Looking for people to share in your outrage? Maybe at one point in your life the Lips were your thing. Now you've clearly headed down different paths. You're sick of the music, the setlists, the banter, the stage show, the use of backing tracks, the band's personal and business decisions. You've already gone to the band and personally expressed your concerns with no results. I'd sincerely recommend finding a band which better fits your ideals and not relying on one thats not making you happy to be your musical obsession.

I understand it’s a discussion board and its here for fans to express their opinions, good and bad. At this point we all know where you stand and we've all made our own decisions where we stand, and the Lips just keep plugging on. If they lose us all, let ‘em fail. What do you want? Everyone to join together and complain so much that they see the error of their ways and change everything? Are you really going to respect an “artist” that lets other people dictate who they are and what they do?

Maybe the majority of their fans do agree with you. Maybe they are losing their following and/or they are out of ideas and these commercials/ corporate sponsored shows/ naked girls on stage are their last desperate attempt to stay in the business and gain exposure with people who haven’t figured out how hypocritical and boring they are yet. They are making their own informed decisions. Whatever happens won’t be anyone’s fault but their own. If at the end of the day, they made enough money to make a living putting on the show they wanted to put on, and they are comfortable with what they chose to do to make that happen, maybe that will be enough for them. I’m sorry it’s not what you wanted for them. I’m sure Wayne would love to see you happy, I’d love to see you at shows and be happy, but I think he’s going to keep doing what makes him happy either way. I think he’s always been pretty up front about that being the goal.

Yikes! Eek

I hate being tucked in the middle of this flaming on flaming.

Two nice people. Too much negative emotion.

The Flaming Lips aren't that popular of a band, and don't sell that many albums. They don't tour all the fucking time like Phish did, and their tickets are less expensive for a show which probably costs more to produce.

As a result, the band plays shows sponsored by booze or tobacco companies (Damn, more free Lips shows, that pisses me off), or lets their music be used for commercials (Damn, a commercial with music that doesn't totally suck ass, that pisses me off as well).

Relax, enjoy the ride.

Very true.
I usually drop over $200 for a pair of {bad} Rush or U2 tickets whenever I get the opportunity. To see the lips a zillion times for the same price? Geez, if all I have to do is walk thru the cigarette smoke and Camel merchants to do it? I'll take it!

spaceships are expensive, and my CoM ticket was free

more money to the Lips, anyway they want to get it!...but, if it'll make some of you feel better, everytime you here the "Yeah Yeah Yeah" commercial, remember what those words really mean in the song. We are making fun of,and dissing, that shit when we sing along. Perhaps Kraft sucks like Bush, the Natural Born Ass.

Anyone who doesn't know or see the importance of music in commercials are WAY behind the times.

The Lips are one of the few bands i can give a pass 2 for doing it.

They made some FANTASTIC records that largely got/get unnoticed. Those records still stand out on their own & deserve much more credit & recognition than even Wayne gives them.

Quite a few bands got a lot of $shine$ for making records The Flaming Lips were crushing.

*Hands Wayne, Steven & Michael a pass*

I only give them a pass because the practice is so ubiquitous at this point. This is really poor reasoning on my part, but a good share of bands whose music and ethics I find refreshing seem to not have a problem with this. Maybe it's a change of the times, maybe it's a change for the worse, but I cannot for the life of me imagine hating on the Lips for selling a song to an advertising corporation.

With all of that said, I fucking die a little every time I see the Kraft commercial. Lips, I fucking love you, but that was/is a stupid move.
