Paul Lester has been a massive Lips fan back since the early '90's and is probably a bit biased.

Still Smile

Mystics review.

YES! Arguably the most sonically amazing thing on the first side of the record.

It's hard to tell if the reviewer is being sarcastic or not. I can't tell, does he enjoy the album or what? Sometimes it seems like he's praising it and sometimes it seems like he's bashing it.

Stereogum has a pitchin' little add for this album on the front page at the moment. You rollover it to expand it, and it includes what I'm guessing is some of the artwork from the booklet (you can actually see that bit without doing the rollover. It looks like a painting of some guy on a mountain holding up something)and some new press photos.

Edit: Also, iTunes preorder is up. It includes four bonus tracks, 3 of which are the "B-Sides EP". The other track is called "Just Above Love".

I trust Lips fans reviews of this album more than anyones.

Specifically... my opinion Big Grin Razz

I mean seriously. When was the last time you bought an album because Pitchfork or Rolling stone said it was good?

When was the last time you saw a movie becuz Ebert said it was good?

That's the same score they gave both Clouds and Bulletin.

Didn't Rolling Stone give Nirvana's Nevermind 3 out of 5 and pretty much just dismiss it? Then when they became huge they started sucking Cobain's cock and gave In Utero 4 and a half out of 5?

I never let a negative review cause me to not listen to something but positive reviews have helped me discover some great stuff.

I agree--Rolling Stone sucks.
RS has typically been indifferent to the Lips, and I'm not sure why. They couldn't even find room for the Soft Bulletin in their Best 500 Albums list (one imagines it might have come somewhere before Cyndi Lauper). With their consistently low ratings of the Lips recorded output, I feel the subtext is something like "The Flaming Lips are only a great live band, and just an average recording group," which is not how I see them at all.
Eh, it doesn't mean much in the end. I still love the Lips.

rolling stone pays attention to pop music. thats all they do now.

this album is NOT pop music. this is incredible rock and roll music.

I was so disappointed with AWWTM that I believed they had completely fallen off a cliff. I'm listening to Embryonic right now and while I am nowhere close to digesting it or putting my seal of approval on it, I'm immediately convinced that this is exactly the kind of album I wanted to hear and thought they'd never make.
