ever notice that a lot of bands these days are simply clones of older more successful ones? like for instance the wave of radiohead imitators we saw after ok computer (bloody coldplay). however no one seems to have looked at the flaming lips formula and copied it- why do you think this is? are they just too awesome to be imitated?

The Flaming Lips have always been original. Wayne Coyne is a fucking original no doubt. Ive noticed quite a few bands within the past 5-7 years smooth out their sound a bit. Ditch the loud guitar noises with synths. Add digi beats here or there. Ditch the "rock" for a more "modern computer" sound.

So with that said, i think The Lips are imitating themseves right now more than anything.

This next album is critical imo

Because it's hard to imitate The Flaming Lips?

I think any band that manages to get a musician comparable to Steven Drozd and a front man comparable to Wayne Coyne will, themselves, think they're great. And then they'll stop being like The Flaming Lips.

Tripping Daisy and the band led by the same guy...
The Polyphonic Spree. Both those bands seemed like different "light" versions of the Lips in their different phases.

I don't just mean their music, I just wonder how many other bands could make such a big deal of their concerts without being pretentious or arrogant about.

I's not that other bands can't it's that they mostly don't want 2.

Peace, Love & Cosmic Life Or Death isn't a big seller nor is it a direction most bands want to go in. It HHHAAANNNDDDSSS The Lips their originality & allows that band to be who they... be. Big Grin

Aside from the fact that they're big and happy, I don't think there are many similarities between the Lips and the Spree. The Polyphonic Spree is a twenty-something piece band recording songs that are mostly the same chord progressions (though they don't think it's a problem, if you watch the Fragile Army DVD). I love the Spree, but, for a humongous band, they're not very deep. There are a handful of songs of theirs that I really really like, the rest feel like, as novel said about the Lips, they were imitating themselves.

The Lips are WAY deeper and broader, despite what their last two releases may imply. Every album has such a different feel, and within those, every song has another story and another point to make.

To put it one way, I feel like almost anyone could write a Polyphonic Spree song's lyrics. You talk about the sun, walking, love...add lots of horns, flutes, and big drum fills. To write a Lips song is much harder, because you have to be Steven Drozd.

Actually, OK Computer is a very well-concealed re-tread of artists like Pink Floyd, Can, Aphex Twin, and Momus. Not new at all. I like how people think Radiohead are innovators. It's pretty amusing.

Sixteen Deluxe, The Swirlies, Harvey Danger, Moose, Chainsaw Kittens, Medicine, Starlight Mints, Grandaddy, Helios Sequence, Ambulance LTD., Menomena, and Tripping Daisy immediately come to mind. I'm sure I could think of more given an allowance of time. Being one-of-a-kind doesn't necessarily keep other bands from coping your style. The Flaming Lips in and of themselves are apparent pilferings of bands like Sonic Youth, Can, Chrome, Butthole Surfers, Bjork, and Múm; and those are the apparent ones. It what gets done with those influences that separates the geniuses from the hacks.

hmmm i sense a slight bias against radiohead here. obviously all bands have influences and radiohead were influenced certainly by the bands you listed in your comment, but to refer to ok computer as a "well concealed retread" is a bit silly. first off all music is derivative- thats what makes it great- taking the best bits of other bands and interpreting it in your own way. and seriously i think you'll find radiohead are innovators- listen to Kid A and you'll see what im talking about.

what i meant as imitators was a band that pretty much copies the style of another band that has suddenly captured the zeitgeist as was prominent with muse/coldplay etc post ok computer. and i can see how a lot of the bands you listed are similar to the lips in ways...but what i am trying to say is that at no point was there a flock of bands all jumping on the flaming lips bandwagon. i think maybe the reasons for this are a) flaming lips have never properly become a mainstream band b) they tend to take a shift in direction at least every couple of albums. also dude how do harvey danger sound anything like the lips? :P

is this some sort of bad joke? half of the "indie" bullshit out there sounds like a failed attempt to be the flaming lips.

none of it is anywhere as good though.

also, have you ever heard the Polyphonic Spree?

i honestly cant think of any indie bands that sound remotely like the flaming lips man- indie music is far more influenced by eighties new wave stuff like joy division and then also a lot of it sounds like coldplay who in turn copy radiohead.

yeah ive heard of the polyphonic spree and they were one of the bands that i considered as being similar to the lips but i think grandaddy are more like the lips tbh
