Honestly one of my favorite things about this album is how if you hear a song from it, you KNOW what album its on. It's got an unmistakable feel and sound to it. I'd say that makes it pretty damned "focused".

I listened to this fucker while on the pizza toppings the other night and I was actually amazed at how focused it really is. It all seems very connected. It SOUNDS like one piece of work and then of course there's the repeating themes of evil (whether in the lyrics or the bass lines) and the sample of the dude talking and the gila monster... yeah. Dig it.

For me this is the type of album that's great to *really* listen to, but that maybe isn't so great to have on in the background. But I'm sort of weird in that I usually don't like listening to music in the background anyway (I find it distracting usually.)

Just because you don't like the album does not mean that's what I said. That's your interpretation of what I said based on how you feel about it, but please do not put words in my mouth. I'm very sorry you don't like the album but don't rain on everyone else's parade, pretty please?

Let me try to rephrase what I meant. The album has a certain atmosphere to it that remains consistent regardless of the "jam-like" nature of it. Never once did I feel a song didn't "belong" on this album, or could have fit better on a different Flaming Lips CD. That is why I feel this album is focused.

Was that better?

I like how the CD comes in a case. That way I know where my CD is when I put it in the case.

it IS unfocused, it is a big sprawling mess, thats kind of the point. it was beautiful that the lips got all this mainstream success the last ten years, but probably most of the people who loved yoshimi and the soft bulletin still didnt buy in a priest driven ambulance. you have to expect this...

embryonic made me check out bitches brew. MINDFUCKIN

Hmmm... I'd agree that Embryonic is a mess, but not unfocused; their focus was on the jam-based material and just making a scatterbrained album. I mean seriously, I give The FLips more credit than that--they are more calculated than that to just put out an unintenionally messy record. It's like orginized chaos. Does that make sence? But now we're arguing semantics.

I didn't like the album at first, but after seven listens, I do like it. BUt I think for a time my brain just didn't compute, you know? I was like "Where are the songs?" But then again, I didn't like The Soft Bulletin when it came out, and I was like "Where's the noisy guitars?" It took me a year to really appreciate the brilliance of Soft Bulletin, so if that's any indication... Razz

My sole complaint with the album is the "double album" thing. They should have 'trimemd the fat' because a chunk of the songs (not all) are subpar album songs, as compared with their catalog. I mean seriously, you may enjoy "I Can be A Frog" or "If", but they're b-side material. You know it, I know it. So my point is that IF they had cut Embryonic down to 12 songs/50 mimutes, this would have been thier masterpiece; it would also not sound so messy or unfocussed.

Trust me... I already ripped, edited, resequenced and crossfaded a 12-song/50-m,inute version of the album and it's fucking amazing.

Nah. A big, messy, sprawling masterpiece is not the same if it's not big and messy. It's meant to be long (and, well, messy and imperfect); it's in the White Album/Double Nickels on the Dime/Sign o' the Times/Physical Graffiti/Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness tradition. Dig it.

Also, "If" is a lovely interlude. It's barely two minutes long, too.

Did I ever mention I think the same thing about The Wall? That it should be a single-album? Oddly enough, I feel White and Mellon Collie shoudl stay the way they are... Razz

Single-album, double-album, it's still a bunch of whiny adolescent faux-profundity.
