DSOTM was never my favourite Floyd lp, I geuess I never really got it. Great Gig in the Sky ????

I always felt a disappointed when they played it live in it's entirety, there are so many other tunes (Echoes, Fat Old Sun,) that i'd have preferred to have heard instead.

Mostly I like something with a little more intensity to it.

In addition to this I don't reckon that it would have taken The Lips very long to complete the project, (they already know most of the tracks and have plenty of previous with regard to covering Pink Floyd tunes at gigs).

Breathe at Glastonbury 2003

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...75D8F3F7F95&index=24)

Ultimately I think it's a bit of fun for the band and a bit of fun for the fans that share their love of the album, much in the same way as Colonel Claypools Fearless Flying Frog Brgade playing Animals all the way through.

It's just a bit of fun, an indulgence, which sure is out of character Wink

Peaches on "Great Gig In The Sky?" You've got to be fucking kidding me. I'll be ready to eat some goddamn crow if and/or when the time comes, but this sounds awful.

Hi Emp, I'm with you on the Peaches thing, I shudder...............

I'm also afraid that I'm not an overly florid or accomplished descriptor of music.

It sounds like the concept of deep fried pizza.

It's Clayppol playing Floyd, whatever you're imaginging that sounds like is probably about correct.

His nasaly delivery isn't a million miles from Waters' pained yelping. The bass playing is slightly more muso although not completely over the top and out of place, they remain faithful to the lp pretty much

I'm sure I could dig out a copy if you're interested in giving it a listen

They also cover Shine On You Crazy Diamond & Thela Hun Ginjeet (80's Crimson) at the same gig.

The Crimson song is a better match for them.

But then what's the point of even covering something? Is the point to make an exact duplicate of the original, or put your own twist on it? If I wanted to hear someone do the exact Pink Floyd copy, I'd go see Australian Pink Floyd; but then I'd get annoyed and go listen to the album. In my experience, when covering a song you'd want to alter it to fit your band's style. But I will admit, one of my old bands have covered all of Transmissions and Clouds, and we just did them like the Flips did live. So I guess there's no answer here. Razz

For the record, I thought the Flying Frogs set 1 was a fantastic Claypool release, but the Animals set 2 was awful. But that's because I never liked Animals in the first place (BORING). But I still give them an A for effort.

Maybe Roger Waters will cover Yoshimi. I'd FLAC that.

I think that in Claypools case it was a love of the lp and a desire to step into the shoes of his heroes if only for a little while (coupled with indulgence), it's up to the audience whether to go with it ot not, can't see Lips version of DSOTM being any different, unless they RADICALLY reinterpret it.

My bands have also often covered floyd and lips tunes, (though not entire albums, so hats off for that!) it was fun, but we didn't pretend to be pushing any boundries with it.

I liked Animals.....but prefer Atom Heart Mother.

in the past the FLIPS played a lot of FLOYD stuff: set the controls for the heart of the sun, a killer version of Lucifer Sam, breathe, us and them, a catastrophic wish you were here in 1985 ! and brain damage too in probably the most beautiful medley covers with sh'e's gone mad !!! my eyes are full of tears at each time ...

but now DSOTM entirely... good idea that will great because the FLIPS are NOT a tribute band !!!

I don't think the Lips have covered anyone more than Pinhk Floyd, so Dark Side makes sense for them. I love their take on the band.

Is "Bill Carson" your real name, or is that a The Good The Bad & The Ugly reference?
