Does anyone know the story/history behind Michael's pitched down voice? It seems to have been a part of the Flips sound for years, right up to Free Radicals.
For example, is that him on Shine on Sweet Jesus? Deathporn Immortality Blues? Be My Head? Or did someone else overdub some of these voices? What is the earliest track to use this voice? What other tracks use it and when did they add it to the live show? Thanks! |

Quoting from Staring at Sound by Jim DeRogatis; "Shine on Sweet Jesus ...including a down-tuned vocal by Michael that sounds like Satan singing through a megaphone" also used on the doo-wop-wop backing vocals in Everyone wants to live forever.

And I assume that's him on "It Overtakes Me" as well? (Disappear down a black hole) I love the effect...it has to be pitched down, though. His speaking voice does not seem like it could make that sound.

Wayne's voice gets the pitch-shift treatment in 'Put the Waterbug in the Policeman's Ear,' and "The Big Ol' Bug is the New Baby Now." Admittedly, these are stories and not melodies. These examples seem to use the real-time pitch shift effect created with a tape machine... '1000ft Hands' sounds like it uses a similar effect to me, but it would twice as cool if Wayne actually manipulated his voice like that without effects!
Listening back to The Big Ol' Bug right now, I notice the pitched down voices during the final chorus'... could be Michael? Does Michael ever sing on a track in which his voice is NOT pitch shifted? |

I wanted to bring back this thread because I'd still love to hear some other peoples thoughts, stories, or comments.
Any other tracks that use the pitched down voice besides the ones mentioned? When did they introduce this effect live? |

Is it Michel in 1000 Ft. Hands? You know, the "See, I thought I wasn't mad" part.
