Hi. Differing opinion does not make one an asshole. Sorry you had to find out this way.

I kind of feel the same tbh. A lot of Embryonic sounds lazy, incompetent and uninspired to me.

Only one paragraph was actually about the album, and that didnt go into much(any?) detail of why the new album is "unfocussed and discordant, an art-rock misadventure"

Surley if you give an album one star you should back it up with more than this?

Assholes,I mean we(the Irish t.v. licence payer) pay for them to write this shit.

He didn't have the space to go into it really. RTE.ie isn't exactly the place to go for substantial, informative music journalism.

Eh, I wouldn't call them assholes and they pretty much concede that it's a polarizing record that will turn some people off to it.

The album is clearly meant to be polarizing and discordant. Some won't be into it. Accept the debate.

Well it's a pretty retarded argument to make seeing as how this album has been their highest chart placing in the band's history yet he's saying "the suits won't be getting anything for Christmas for this one" and "put it on your website as a free download."

I'm with Kinda, this reviewer didn't put any effort into the review at all and only sounds like an asshole. Just because he didn't like the album doesn't mean he can make such unfounded claims.

That's not really a review at all, it's just an opinion and i think the writer pretty much says so himself. Now, i don't know why they have published that in the first place. Is this a writer who writes reviews professionally, as in gets paid for it? I have always thought there's something fishy about people who make a living writing about music.

One guy, not a plural, surely? Anyway, I'm agreeing a bit with him and windowlicker. The album hit me at first, but after that impact, I'm just not feeling much from it. Great sounds, wicked elements, but, maybe on purpose, it is unfinished, like a canvas well gone-over to work out the shades and the form of a thing, but missing the thing itself. No doubt some of the tracks will be amazing live, but as an album, my thumbs have lowered from fully up to fairly horizontal.

It's really frustrating 'cos the handful of songs I really like give me a glimpse of the amazing album they could have made.

I think one of the things that's great about this album is how it's something that most people will either really hate or really love. Not too many folks will just think it's "so so."

Personally, it's growing on me more and more. I really gave it a close listen last night and I was impressed with how it all feels quite cohesive in a strange way. There's all of these recurring themes lyrically and sonically.

Look, I haven't even bought the album yet, so I can't really judge how accurate the review is, but I think the guy could have phrased this in a way that wasn't talking shit about the band.
In other words, as a blanket statement, he didn't write it, so he really has no right to put x amount of stars to it's name or do anything whether than say he liked it or not, and yes, this technically still applies to any articles that review it as being the most life-changing of all time or whatever.

I have been waiting for Tusk and am overjoyed there is no Rumors pt. 2. Hopefully the new fans (pop fans from yoshitty) will drop and go back to Weezer, Godsmack, Collective Soul, or the Shins chatboards where they belong. Tusk was a great record, but so was Rumors and the self titled one before with Rhiannon and Landslide. You should trade that copy of Embryonic in for a used copy of Tusk on vinyl. You deserve it (they were a multinational supergroup you could rollerskate to in the late 70's).
I really do like Tusk and Embryonic.
Reviewers should tell people what kind of stereo they use when reviewing albums/cds.

It doesn't annoy me that he slates it, but it annoys me that it isn't well-written, and has no reasons for slating it. From reading it, it doesn't make me feel like I should respect his opinion.

Just realize this is one reviewer's opinion. I like that below his one star they put the user rating, which is four stars.

This is what you call an outlier, folks.

I was just having this discussion with my wife last night. There are many things I love about many of the songs, but it seems as though they are purposely trying to avoid melodies and hooks. Its a great album for music lovers, but it's not something I can easily listen to on a whim. I'm finding I have to be more in the right mood to listen to it.
