I do. I usually have Lips songs in my head and i have to hear it or go mad muttering songs under my breath. I crave early lips at times, mid-period at times, and the new stuff, too. It's all so very different, but you can hear the early stuff and catch moments that hint at what's to come. There has always been a common thread, besides the musicans themselves, running through their music.

I always play their old shit & i really get a kick out of telling people who the band is since the band has basically abandoned that sound/noise.

I don't care what Wayne says or thinks. The old shit needs to be brought back to the live shows. Fuck y'er Hour & Half set & play a handful of y'er older songs & now you got atleast a 2 hour set.

A lot of kids really dig the older material. A LOT more than Wayne thinks.

Well I first heard the lips in early 2007, and now i've heard all their albums back to Priest. In many cases I love the older material just as much as the new stuff. So yeah, a few earlier tracks (Clouds in particular) would be great.

I'd classify Priest as mid really. Everything up to Telegraphic Surgery is "old", Preiest to Clouds is mid, I guess Zaireeka on is new. At least that's the way I tend to think of it.

I think of Priest as the zenith of their "old" stuff. I think it is a particularly wonderful album that never gets old.

Old Lips = Hear It Is, Oh My Gawd, Telepathic, In A Priest

Midi-Lips = HTD, Transmission, Clouds, Zaireeka

New Lips = Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, @WWTM

But Priest is with a whole new crew. Richard is gone and there's a total new direction in sound. That's why I link it more with mid period.

the switch to warner brothers makes for a more definite line of demarcation.

Mr. Modular is right, Priest to Clouds (90-96) is their mid period. Zaireeka is the beginning of the new period. Will there ever be such a diverse shift in sound as the one that began in 97?? I'd hope so but i don't think so.

Like I said in the NEW LIPS thread. After seeing the WHO tribute, and the lack of backing tapes played behind them, I found them to be, dare I say, FUCKING AWESOME, with out them.

I think it's high time they shelved that shit and got back to being a 4 piece rockin teenage combo.

Strip down the Yoshimi stuff and rock that bitch!

You know Pink Floyd toured ATOM HEART MOTHER a lot without all the brass orchestra's and choir's and it still kicked ass.

I have full confidence Wayne and the boys can do just as well.

i see y'er point but HTD was the true shift of the new sound & new recording procedures with that band in the midi period.... with the WB label & sounds that we somewhat still hear today from that record, HTD not IAP.

imo IAP was the pinnacle of their old stuff that kinda showed them or gave them the belief that they can make bigger better records, especially in the studio ------->HTD not IAP

Zaireeka sounds NOTHING like the new shit to me. It was the begining of the end to what would lead to their new sound -----> TSB. Zaireeka still has that creepy weird Lips vibe to it that NONE of their new shit has. Still had that sound & feel of their midi shit.

I really miss the weirdness of this band. I don't neeed to hear them geetarr rock again they already did that shit. I don't want that again.

It's all about that creepy weird vibe for me. Not everyone could listen to this band back in the day but now it seems like The Lips are for "everyone".

I think it's fair to say Zaireeka is the beginning of their "new" period - I mean, they lost fucking Ronald. If that's not a change, I dunno what is.

I always get a kick out of listening to old Lips after a newer record...though the only "Old" period record I really enjoy is OMG.

i could give a flying fuck about who comes in & comes out of the band... especially when 2 main components stay. Wayne & Michael.

Zaireeka IS NOTHING like the new shit therefore it is NOT new shit. Zaireeka was the begining of an END that lead to TSB. TSB is the REAL change or the real shift NOT Zaireeka.

It sounds like their midishit. Still has the same vibe. It's like HTD on steroids.

Zaireeka is everything their new shit isn't.

Soooooo, everyone classifies old, mid, new periods differently...got it. Roll Eyes

Anyway, what I mean when I say old Lips, and you might recall I started the thread (and I was an actual fan DURING the "old" period and can tell you from experience that Priest was quite a change, so much that it took me a good long while to appreciate it for what it is), is everything up to and including Telegraphic Surgery.
