Personally, it's my favorite Lips album... I see it as the transition between their noisier more experimental side from the first four albums and the poppier more accessible music of the next two.
Why is it that most people who like the FLips have never even heard of this album? "Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues", "Gingerale Afternoon", "You Have to be Joking", "The Magician vs. the Headache" and "Frogs" all easily stand up to anything the FLips have ever done. Is it because of how poorly Warner Bros promoted the album? Because of the weird cover? The parental advisory label? I honestly think that if the album was promoted properly before release, it could have been huge, especially since it was released in the immediate aftermath of the whole grunge explosion. |

I would listen to it even more if it were remastered. It sounds kind of tinny too me. I still love it and listen to it a lot as it is.

Why? Because they're wrong.
First Lips album I ever owned. Picked it up used on a whim for $2. |

It almost happened. According to Kliph, Warner Bros. was going to reissue it on vinyl a while ago, but they canceled the release when they couldn't find the artwork. The album was only released in Germany and in a very limited quality. It's nearly impossible to find... |

This is my fave as well. Did you dig Boces by the Mercury Rev? The first 3 Rev albums and Priest Driven through Satellite really sums up a great era.
Check out Radial Spangle and Charm Pops! |

It sounded real good on tape in a car back then.

I've heard parts of "Yerself is Steam", but that's it. I've been meaning to check out more of their stuff. |

Dude if you like the early warner (flips) albums or Priest get you some Boces and Lego my Ego by Mercury Rev. Johnathan Donahue was a flip and rev at the same time there. David Fridman recorded all thee above. He also recorded all of the Radial Spangle albums. They are thee most proficient songwriters on this list, but thee least successful. So sad. They were awesome. Find it used on amazon.

I've liked just about everything the FLips have done (although Soft Bulletin through Mystics haven't aged well with me), so I'll definitely check it out. |

It's the most peculiar album they've ever put out. It sounds different than any of the others. It's underrated and forgotten about for a lot of reasons.

I think it's good, but not nearly as good as Transmissions, and certainly not a patch on Clouds. OP, you're right in saying it marks a transition, but I prefer Transmissions and Clouds because they show the proper 'destination' of that transition.

I love the Ronald albums and tours the best but that albums songs, crazy production, and bizarre feel. I dunno. It stands almost completely by itself from the rest of the catalogue. In the best kinda way. The noise loop riff thing at the end. Tits! It's a little edgier and risky compared to anything else as well. 4 cds was risky, I know.

Let's demand a vinyl reissue! And a 5.1 whatever the f*#k you call the cd with the dvd stuff.

I really haven't heard many people bashing HitToDeathInTheFutureHEad... it is one of the first Lips records I got into and I still enjoy it a lot. A remastered would be nice though.
Certainly, AWWTM seems to be the Lips album most often bashed... |

Hit to Death was my first Lips album.

Are you kidding me? I think the question should be: why don't people who have just got into the lips post-the soft bulletin listen to hit to death in the futurehead more? It's a classic record and always has been among Lips' fans. |

I listen to all the Lips albums pretty regularly except HTDINTF. I'm not really even sure why because I really enjoy that album but for the most part I forget about it in relation to the other Lips albums.

Very, very true. I'll admit that the first Lips album that I ever heard was Mystics, and then I got into Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin but they just haven't aged well with me. They're cool the first time you hear them, but then you realize something... they're boring! I'm the only person who I know personally that likes anything pre-Soft Bulletin. All of my friends dismiss those albums as being nothing but shit, and I honestly don't get why. I was listening to it earlier today and I realized something... Frogs is the PERFECT Lips song! It's got bizarre lyrics (There you are/ infected with the water strain/wash your car/fish and frogs will fall down like rain??) and a catchy pop melody and hook, but then it's also got that crazy guitar part that doesn't even have a riff or a hook... it's just a layer of noise! Loud and abrasive, but catchy and fun at the same time. |
